We’re surrounded by apple orchards. Santa Rosa to the north. Pescadero to the south. Brentwood to the east. In any direction you’ll find farms that welcome you to come and pick them yourself. One of the most reliable is Gabriel Farms in west Sonoma, 14 acres with 15 kinds of organically apples including Macintosh, Fuji and Pink Lady. Branch out beyond apples. They offer  8 varieties of crunchy Asian Pears which are just as sweet but less watery than Bartletts. In addition you can load up on plums, fuyu persimmons and lavender.

At $2 a pound you won’t be picking them to save money, but just for the fun of it.
