It’s breeding season for elephant seals at Ano Nuevo State Park in San Mateo. This occurs annually when 2 ton bull seals come ashore in search of love among the beauteous 1500 pounders in the beachfront harem. Human visitor access is not allowed. Post-coitally the males then paddle out to sea and visitors are invited back. Around mid February the birth rate soars. By March the adults have gone back to sea. The pups stay behind learning to swim until mid March. You can watch all this but only on guided 3-mile, mildly strenuous tours. Tickets are $7 and reservations are required.
