Bay Area seniors have low expectations when it comes to beaches here. No one seriously expects to dive into the arctic surf. But we are compensated by postcard-ready views few of which are more staggering than the one from Kirby Cove in Marin just west of the Golden Gate Bridge. The trail from the parking area is steep but only a mile long. Lately there has been considerable roadwork. There is controlled access for both camping and visiting. Reservations must be made considerably in advance at www.recreation.gov or 877-444-6777. Fees for camping are $25 a night, for picnicking $35 a day.
On weekends if the foggy chill is too much for you, double back to Fort Baker and the Travis Yacht Club & Bar, an unbelievably well kept secret huddled under the north tower with another omg view.
