Bay seniors looking for moments of tranquility can find them in surprising places. We recommend a couple of hidden, rarely visited and free Japanese gardens. One is near downtown Hayward, 3.5 acres of beautiful and precise plantings with ponds and bridges arches over barely moving streams. Open 8-4 daily. In San Mateo, steps from Camino Real traffic madness  is an even smaller garden, designed by the same landscape architect of Tokyo’s Imperial Palace. You might want to bring the grandkids for koi feeding. As far as tea service in both places, it appears to be bring your own.
