Bay seniors who are paid up members of the 1% economic elite can blow a nice chunk of change this weekend at the 2nd Annual Napa Truffle Festival. The object of everyone’s affection will be the black Perigord truffle, celebrated with an endless round of wine tastings, demos by truffle hunting canines, cooking classes and multi-course truffle dinners- the whole package starting, without accommodations, at $800. Yes, you can grow your own truffles but cultivation is expensive ($1,400 for 100 seedlings) and very chancy. These treasured fungi only grow in soil with a very specific alkalinity.

p.s. to foodie readers: foie gras becomes illegal in California this July. I’ve heard that there is a cruelty-free foie gras in the works. Any reader have more information?
