Bay senior cyclists who are looking for more advanced thrills might want to check out the Hellyer Velodrome in San Jose. This oval track hosts serious competitions but every Saturday morning at 8:30 it’s open for beginner sessions. Every lap is .2 miles and banked at 25 degrees. Sessions are $5 each and you can rent special bikes for the occasion. The Geezer should alert you now that these vehicles come without brakes.
For a considerably more laid-back experience you might try out a recumbent bike where you sit lower and your feet are stretched out in front of you. The only place I know you can rent them is in Alameda which is actually a great place to start as the Island, as far as I’m aware, has not a single hill.
