Bay seniors looking for a quick jaunt to Italy might want to head down to Palo Alto and the Memorial Church at Stanford. Set in a vast colonnaded quad it is typical of its time -1898 – when the height of architectural taste was a mashup of classic European styles The basic structure is Romanesque with numerous Byzantine details, almost Pre-Raphaelite stained glass windows (which are quite pleasant, not the gory glories you actually find in Europe). Dedicated by Jane Stanford to her husband Leland, its effect is awesomely heavy. Down the road have a considerably brighter experience at the Cantor Arts Center where dazzling light artworks by Dan Flavin and Robert Irwin are showing through July 8.
