Bay seniors seeking maximum coastal drama might want to brave Highway 1 for 2.5 hours north to the former Imperial Russian outpost at foggy Fort Ross. Last year this State Park celebrated its 200th anniversary (oops, I missed it). It’s only open Saturdays and Sundays now but with our current Wuthering Heights weather you’re likely to have the site pretty much to yourselves. The Chapel and the Rotchev House, in particular, have been richly restored. Free.
If you know almost less than nothing about the dramatic history of the North Coast you might want to start with Mendocino by local novelist Judith Greber.
