Bay seniors, the winner for the #1 hike in the Bay Area (according to me) is the Matt Davis Trail. It zigzags gently for 3 miles down the western slopes of Mount Tamalpais along meadows which turn to gold in the summer, through shady groves, across streams, with heart-stopping views of the Pacific around every turn, to Stinson Beach. Go on a weekday, get there early, park at Pantoll, plan on an hour at least to get down to Stinson. Have lunch on the deck at the Sand Dollar. The softees at Parkside Café are highly recommended. Not interested in hiking uphill? There is bus that takes you back to the parking lot at Pantoll. It doesn’t run often so check the schedule.
