Bay seniors are learning that country life is not as rustic as it used to be. Up in the wine country markets are upgrading shopping to a much more sophisticated level. The key words are artisinal, local and sustainable. At a bend in the Napa River, the Oxbow Public Market is 40,000 urbane square feet of 23 mostly food oriented shops and cafes included Gotts and Hog Island Oyster Bar. Further west in Healdsburg the Shed is a slick, glassy take on a country barn with something called a fermention bar where wine, beer, kombucha and sodas are dispensed. Closed Tuesdays. Another newcomer is the Barlow in Sebastapol which houses 30 local vendors and galleries scattered in a 13-acre former apple packing plant.
