Bay seniors may recall how Irish the city used to be. O’Farrell, Hayes and Geary Streets are all named after Irishmen as is Daly City. At one time it seemed like the entire San Francisco police force was Gaelic. This month, thanks to St. Patrick’s Day, there are non-stop celebrations of this voluble heritage. Kickoff starts on Friday March 7 with the raising of the Irish flag over city hall followed by an Irish dance performance. The 163rd St.Patrick’s Day parade takes over Market Street on the 15th. There are pub crawls at the dozens of Irish bars that dot the city. Irish restaurants still abound. All month long there’s an Irish Crossroads Festival around the Bay. If you feel in the mood to kick up your heels why not take an Irish dancing class?. At the very least make yourself an warming Irish Coffee since it’s all but impossible to get into the Buena Vista Café where the first ones were created in the US.
