Bay seniors who can’t make it to New Orleans for this year’s Mardi Gras might want to consider stopping by our local version in the City’s Bayview District on Friday, February 20 from 5-8. It is all centered around the historic Bayview Opera House, built in 1888 and still active as a community cultural center. The neighborhood is the City’s last vibrant African-American one and the pace of gentrification makes its long-term survival questionable. But every third Friday of the month there’s an arts and music celebration. For this Mardi Gras look for a brass steppers parade, food, crafts, trolley rides and a performance by the SF Jazz Ensemble. Free but reservations are requested.
