Except for the plutocratic campground of Bohemian Grove, the Russian River has managed to escape the creeping hedonism of the Wine Country. The Boon Hotel and Spa outside Guerneville may look a bit eco-luxe with its pool, hot tub, massages, organic linens and breakfast room service, but its 14 rooms and platform tents are modest, quiet refuges. Behind them are the towering redwood cathedrals of Armstrong State Park. A mile away on the river, Johnson’s Beach is still the perfect refreshment on an overheated summer day. Dogs welcome. $175-190.
