No backpacks, no tents, no sleeping bags. Yosemite has accommodations for those not in the mood for roughing it. The Big Trees Lodge (formerly the Wawona) is a small hotel and a series of spiffy, white clapboard cabins with verandas and Adirondack chairs for the seriously laid-back visitor, surrounded by lawns as manicured as any Deep South B&B. Rooms have reproductions of antique furnishings and period décor. Most, but not all have private bathrooms. Do nothing but gaze at the forest’s glorious fall colors or hit the swimming pool, the horseback riding trails, the golf course or fishing streams. Most evenings enjoy live musical performances. Starting at $175 a night. (considerably less than the Yosemite Hotel aka the Ahwahnee which starts at $425).
