This epic eastern Sierra vacation area is Mammoth Lakes (32 miles south of Yosemite) -spelled with an “s” because there is a plethora of water features including Mono Lake, a high desert oasis full of gnarled limestone monuments, hot springs, and the 101-foot Rainbow Falls. Between them are endless miles of hiking and biking trails, camping sites, generous trout fishing sites, old gold mining ghost towns, helicopter tours and a gondola ride that lifts you up 11,000 feet. Whether you are on foot or in a vehicle everything is endlessly interesting, especially the boggling thought that Mono tribes settled here thousands of years ago.
