Far, far from the heavily tourist trodden paths around town is the Grand Walk which rambles up and down our western cliffs on the edge of the Presidio. It’s a 6-mile trail from Sutro Beach’s spa ruins at Lands End to heavily populated Crissy Field. You are promised rigorous exercise, should you choose, climbing up and down the various wooden and natural stairways like the one to Mile Rock Beach then up to the large labyrinth pictured here with its jaw dropping view of the GG Bridge. One of the main challenges is the Sand Ladder with 243 steps. If the weather is warm enough nudists will be frolicking on Baker Beach, and wealthy locals will ignore you as you pass through posh Sea Cliff. Finish at Marshall’s Beach then end up at Fort Point. You know the way from there.
