Since 1982 an ornate brick building in downtown Oakland, rich with 19th century details, a sweeping staircase and stained glass has housed the African American Museum and Library. Currently the 2nd floor museum is displaying, besides a stirring civil rights history, a touching exhibit “Give Me Life”, almost two dozen joyous photographs shot by social documentarian Katie Sugarman, of recipients of lung, heart, cornea and other transplants.Their testimonials are vivid testaments to being given a second chance at life. Open through the summer.
