Every township in the Bay Area will be celebrating the nation’s birth but few match the down home events at Monte Rio along the Russian River. On Saturday and Sunday there are the Big Rocky Games from noon to 4 with canoe, kayak and inner tube races, rock skipping, a rubber ducky contest, water balloon tossing and ice cream eating contests. It takes you way, way back. Sunday things get even cozier with a prizes awarded for a parade of home decorated carnival floats and a water curtain on the town bridge with flags and other patriotic images projected on it. It goes on for hours until the day finishes with penultimate fireworks. And all activities, like this great country, are free.
