Downsizing is a challenge in the pricey Bay Area. A more recent development, co-housing, is an attractive solution. These are apartment complexes for seniors, bona fide homes with kitchens as well common areas that may include a gym, a hot tub and a central dining area. The whole complex is self-managed by occupants. An example of one here is Alameda’s Phoenix Commons. Prices run from $520,000 to $730,000. Homeowners monthly fees are $650. Not too shabby.
