In 1967 word reached Manhattan that a radical new culture was being born in San Francisco. Motorcylists, hippies, musicians, even people we knew, created a community centered in the Haight and Alex Lieberman from Conde Nast, urged his talented new photograper Irving Penn to grab his Rollieiflex and head west. Penn’s portfolio, classic and uncluttered as salon portraits, is now showing at the Pace Gallery in Palo until May 26. Who knows, you may see some faces you recognize.
