The epic drama of 19th century California has been preserved in the very large scaled photographs of Carleton Watkins, many of which are available for your viewing pleasure at the Fraenkel Gallery in the City until October 19. Not only did Watkins leave a vivid record of the construction of the Pacific Railroad from Sacramento to Utah, but his operatic Yosemite shots helped convince President Lincoln and Congress to start preserving our very, very grand valley.
