Does it surprise you as it does me to note that SF, with one of the most strikingly beautiful locations in the country, has hardly anything historically and architecturally significant? Except, in my solo view, the store at 140 Maiden Lane designed in1948 by Frank Lloyd Wright. The exterior is a swirl of deco bricks without the typical retail windows. Inside, even in its cramped space, it’s a preview of Wright’s masterpiece, the Guggenheim in New York with a circular ramp that rises to the second story. There have been a series of stores located here, now it’s ISAIA, a trendy Italian sportswear store. Stop by and gawk anytime.
